The John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre Biobank

The John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDRC) Biobank located at the International Centre for Life (Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University). The JWMDRC Biobank, was established in 2008 and comprised one the five core activities of the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases aimed at supporting the translational program of the centre. The main objective of the biobank is to provide well characterized, high quality biomaterials such as muscle, cell lines, DNA, RNA, plasma, serum, urine and CSF of patients with neuromuscular disorders to researchers within the centre and the wider scientific community. Currently, the JWMDRC Biobank has assembled a collection of more than 17,000 anonymised rare disease samples mostly derived from NMD patients. In 2010, the Biobank was recognised as an official member of EuroBioBank (http://www.eurobiobank.org/en/information/info_institut.htm) and has applied quality criteria and standard operation procedures in accordance with EuroBioBank protocols.
